Essex, CT (May 2025)
Last weekend I went to Essex on the Connecticut shoreline. I wasn't feeling very well and Essex is quite small so I wasn't out for long, but I did get to stop by the Connecticut River Museum and have some ice cream at least.

Connecticut River Museum
It's a small museum, but it has some good exhibits with interesting aerial photographs of the river along the stairs. The big draws, however, are the ships: a working replica of the Onrust, the first European vessel to sail up the Connecticut River (built 1613/14); and two replicas of the Turtle, the first military submarine (built 1775). You can walk into one of the Turtle replicas, which is pretty cool, but apparently the other replica is actually functional, which is really remarkable!
